Xero Footprint Water: The environmentally responsible, Rocky Mountain artesian bottled water.
December 8, 2008
From: Adam Bedard, Founder
, a Denver-based startup bottled water company, will begin shipping its flagship zero carbon footprint bottled water this month.
is the market’s first Rocky Mountain artesian bottled water that is produced, shipped, and disposed of with a zero carbon footprint.
’s goal is to create the most environmentally responsible bottled water.
How big is your carbon footprint?
We are facing a climate crisis. Carbon footprint is a measure of the impact activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. Greenhouse-gas emissions (GHG) have risen rapidly in the past two centuries and levels today are higher than at any time in at least the past six hundred and fifty thousand years. Carbon dioxide is the recognized as the major culprit in climate change. The production, transport, and disposal of products like bottled water generate direct and indirect contributions of GHGs. There is growing demand for products produced by forward-thinking companies like
who are cognizant of the impact their product has on the environment.
How is Xero Footprint doing its offset?
Distance matters. The farther away the source of water, the more energy is consumed and GHG emissions are created. Competitors in the bottled water market ship from faraway places like Fiji, which is over 6,000 miles from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. This is why
uses local, Rocky Mountain flowing artesian water.
purchases carbon offsets from TerraPass (www.terrapass.com).
TerraPass is a social enterprise that provides carbon offsets to individuals and businesses. TerraPass uses proceeds from member purchases to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects such as clean energy produced by wind power, farm power which makes good use of animal wastes, and landfill gas capture, which reduces the impact of our own wastes. All of TerraPass’ purchases are Green-e certified through the Center for Resource Solutions
Xero Footprint’s Water
’s artesian water comes from an ancient aquifer located beneath the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The water is naturally filtered by layers of glacial sand, several hundred feet thick and is then protected by impermeable layers of clay and rock, creating water that is pure and great tasting.
’s water source is a pure, clean and flowing artesian water that is low in Total Dissolved Solids.
The Future
The carbon offset is just the first step.
’s future plans include utilizing renewable energy like wind and solar along the supply chain and use of new bottling technologies that biodegrade to minimize landfill impacts.
